Tree removal in Adelaide. Regulated + Significant categories handled. Lower SA rates.
Adelaide is the cheapest of the six capitals for tree work. Lower labour rates, wider streets, easier suburban access. The catch is South Australia's two-tier protection system — Regulated and Significant — which catches more mature trees by default than NSW or QLD. Most jobs over 8m need at least a Regulated check.
Regulated and Significant trees — the SA system
South Australia's Planning, Development and Infrastructure Act 2016 covers tree protection. The thresholds:
- Regulated tree — trunk circumference ≥2 metres at 1 metre above ground (about 64cm diameter). Includes most mature gums, planes, and elms in metro Adelaide. Removal requires Development Plan Consent.
- Significant tree — trunk circumference ≥3 metres at 1m (about 95cm diameter). Approval requires arborist statement and council assessment. Higher bar to remove.
- Some species are exempt — declared pest plants (Olive, Tree of Heaven), and some willows. Check the council exemption list before assuming.
Most metro councils inside Adelaide adopt these state thresholds without modification. Full state directory covers the variations.

The dry climate and tree health
Adelaide's Mediterranean climate puts native trees under summer stress most years. River red gums in particular shed limbs during heatwaves — the spontaneous limb drop that gives gums their nickname "widow-makers". Regular deadwood cleans (every 2–3 years) and crown reductions on overhang are the difference between a tree that lives 80 years and one that comes down through the carport in February.
Pre-summer prune (Sept–Nov): $400–$1,000 for a typical Regulated SA blue gum. Saves the carport replacement, the insurance excess, and the inconvenience.

Frequently asked — Adelaide
Do I need a permit to remove a tree in Adelaide?
SA uses Regulated (≥2m trunk circumference, council consent needed) and Significant (≥3m circumference, higher-bar approval). Most mature metro Adelaide trees fall under Regulated.
How much does tree removal cost in Adelaide?
Adelaide runs 15–20% below national average. Small: $300–$700. Medium: $700–$1,500. Large: $1,300–$2,800. Permit liaison: $200–$500.
What's the difference between Regulated and Significant?
Regulated trees are protected by default — most mature trees in metro Adelaide. Significant trees are individually listed, higher bar to remove, more documentation needed.
What about olive trees?
European olives (Olea europaea) are declared pest plants in SA — removal usually exempt from permit and actively encouraged.
Do you cover the Adelaide Hills?
Yes — Stirling, Aldgate, Bridgewater, Crafers, Belair, Blackwood. Hills sites add 10% for terrain access. Bushfire-zone work has additional safety overhead.
